Talking Cows:Almost Human
It comes as no surprise that the four musicians who make up this quartet are all fans of the “new Dutch swing” of pianist and bandleader Misha Mengelberg. Pianist Robert Jan Vermeuelen displays encyclopedic knowledge of boogie-woogie, be-bop, stride, blues and other styles while saxophonist Frans Vermeerssen blow his fill throughout. The real key to what makes the music so positively playful is the inventive and driving rhythm section of drummer Yonga Sun and bassist Dion Nijland. In the best tradition of the Netherlands’ jazz scene, the playing is excellent, the humour front and centre and the joy of the production quite catching. You just know that this group is one you want to see live. In the meantime, don’t miss the ridiculous videos about jazz, cows and lowland dairy farmers that the band has gone viral with online. Personally, I’d solicit your local jazz festival bookers to have this group on the roster come the summer festival season. Stuart Derdeyn

DE COMPOSITIES ZIJN STERK, MET EXPRESSIEVE MELODIEËN
De mensen met koeienhoofden die ook de derde cd sieren, zijn terecht een handelsmerk van Talking Cows, dat herkenbare jazz speelt met speelse trekjes. Het is geen wonder dat tenorsaxofonist Frans Vermeerssen, samen met pianist Robert Vermeulen de leider van het kwartet, een liefhebber is van Roland Kirk: net als die duivelskunstenaar kent hij de traditie - het warme, volle saxgeluid, het spreken en zingen met het instrument, het gevoel voor blues, funk, en swingen in vieren. En net als Rahsaan zet hij de eerbiedwaardige gebruiken naar zijn hand met maffe vervormingen en opwellingen. Ook de orkestrerend spelende Vermeulen weet hoe je verwachtingen doorbreekt, niet als vervreemdend effect maar om het plezier te verhogen. De composities zijn sterk, met expressieve melodieën die aan hun eigen afwisselende ritmes zijn vastgeklonken. Dat deze bezetting al zeven jaar bij elkaar is, valt in elke wending te horen. De cd wordt morgen in het Amsterdamse Bimhuis gepresenteerd, samen met het Frysk Fanfare orkest.

COWS IN SPACE ook op 5 januari/Bimhuis!

We hebben net afgesproken dat het Fries Fanfare Orkest ook zal spelen op onze cd-presentatie in het Bimhuis. Het gaat om een project met het Fries Fanfare Orkest en Talking Cows; op 30 oktober was de premiere in Heerenveen!
Verder is er de cd presentatie van 'Almost Human',
een cd die de volgende fase inluidt in de ontwikkeling van Talking Cows. De VPRO maakt een opname voor Radio 6.
